Kiyama completes 50 man kumite
On the 18th of March 2007, 1231 days after becoming the 2003 World Champion,
Hitoshi Kiyama completed the 50 man kumite in 52 minutes and
recieved his 5th dan. Kiyama, now 33 years old, 176cm and weighing
in at 93kg had 42 wins, 7 draws and 1 loss by dropping the nigiribo
(small cylindrical piece of wood held in both hands during kumite)
from his hand. Completeing the grading with a knee
injury sustained 2 months prior, it didn't appear to phase him as he
got several wazaris and ippons through his ushiro mawashii geri,
chudan and jodan mawashii geris.
He commented after the grading that he didn't really fire up until his
third fight with his kohai and 2007 world team represenitive Yoshitatsu Beppu. After
that fight it all came back to him. Kancho Matsui noted that his
record of 22 ippons and 7 wazaris was the best result in the last 20
years however Kancho Matsui also mentioned that he would have liked
to have seen a more technical approach to his kumite than the
tournament style he resorted to.
Kiyama although now retired from tournament fighting, runs the Mizuho
dojo based in Nagoya city.

The 9th World Champs were held at Tokyo Gymnasium on the 16th,17th & 18th of November 2007. The 3 day event hosted 192 fighters
from over 70 countries. Ewerton Teixeira (Brazil) defeated Jan Soukop (Czech) by ippon with a gedan mawashii geri to become the 9th
world champion. The biggest upset would have to have been two time All Japan champion Yoshiaki Uchida's loss in the fourth round to Zahari Damyanov from
Bulgaria. The match went 2 extensions and with no 10kg weight difference between them, Damyanov won by tamashiwari, 21 boards to
20. Lechi Kurbanov was the other suprise upset when he too sucumbed in the fourth round by jodan mawashii geri to
fellow Russian Ilya Karpenko.
Artur Hovhannisian suprised the crowd when he lost by Tamashiwari to Jan Soukup in the Semi
final 24 boards to 12. 12 boards is the absolute minimum competitiors must break on the final day. Considering that Artur
was also awarded the technical prize, its suprising that he didn't break more. With only one fighter making the top 8
it appears that Japan has a lot of work to do for the 10th world tournament in 2011. Jan Soukop and Darmen Sadvokasov are
our 2 fighters to keep an out for in the future.

Russia wins the World Champs
The 2008 World Women's champs was held in Chiba prefecture, Japan on Sunday the 6th of April.
With 3 divisions a total of 48 competitors competeted for the light, middle and heavy
weight crowns. There were some upsets as 2 divisions produced new champions and Anastasia
Khripunova continued her dominance of the middleweight and won again. Russia had a very
successful day taking all three titles. The results are,
| | Light weight -55kg | Middle weight -65kg | Heavy weight +65kg |
| 1st Place | Elena Vorobyeva / Russia | Anastasia Khripunova / Russia | Anna Kopyrina / Russia |
| 2nd Place | Miruyo Ito / Japan | Dobrslawa Soltysik / Poland | Danaila Cherneva / Bulgaria |
| 3rd Place | Miyoko Kimura / Japan | Proletina Koeva / Bulgaria | Alina Aldatova / Russia |
Some upsets include last year's heavy weight champ Alina Aldatova who placed third this year. And
Miruyo Ito who won the lightweight last year, placed second. Miruyo was strong with her combinations
when she could get in close however at times she couldn't close the distance and Elena used her reach
advantage to land strong kicks. Even when in close, Elena's strength and combinations were able to keep
Miruyo at bay. Miruyo did however come away with a win and placed 1st in the women's kata. With a first
and second place at the 2007 champs, 2008 didn't fare very well for Japan this time.

Andrews Nakahara's MMA debut
Brazillian Kyokushin competitor and the current world middleweight champion Andrews Nakahara made his
MMA debut on April 29th, 2008 in the middle weight catergory of the Dream 2 MMA tournament. The tournament
was held at the Saitama arena in Saitama prefecture next to Tokyo. His opponent was the very reputable
and experienced Kazushi Sakuraba. With fights against the likes of Royce Gracie and a long fight history,
Kazushi Sakuraba was the clear favorite to win. It was setup as a 2 round fight (1st round, 10 mins, 2nd round 5 mins)
however Andrews Nakahara lost in 8.29 minutes of the first round to a choke from Kazushi.
"This Nakahara has potential." Quote from a sports reporter covering the fight.
The reporters covering the fight were impressed that Andrews lasted as long as he did and was able
to damage Kazushi with some of his techniques, especally his gedan mawashi geris.
In one stage of the fight Kazushi had Andrews in the corner. While standing and having his leg
gripped by both of Azushi's hands, Andrews with great balance still managed to land face punches.

2008 All Japan Championships 11 October 2008
The 40th All Japan Championships will be held on the 1st and 2nd of November this year.
Out of the 128 fighters competing this year, 12 competitors from abroad will participate. This year, fighters from
Russia, Korea, Iran and The Ukraine will enter. Other styles of Karate also enter such as the No 49 seeded
Hideo Sawada from Seido Kaikan. This year will feature 116 competitors from around Japan. These fighters
have usually qualified through tournaments at their branch or region in order to participate at the Championships and
become the next All Japan Open Champion. The current champion, Yoshiaki Uchida who won the 2005 and 2006
championships back to back will not be competing this year along with Artur Hovhannisian who was the 2006
runner up. As a result, this has made the tournament interesting
with the 2004 champion Kentaro Tanaka being placed in one of the two, top seed spots "No 128" opposing Makoto
Akaishi, winner of this years heavyweight title in Osaka at the other end of the draw in the "No 1" seed spot. If they win all of their matches over the two day event, they
will meet in the 7th round to fight for the title of "2008 All Japan Open-weight champion"
With the tournament being open-weight, the lightest competitor this year will weigh in at 62 kg and the heaviest at 145kg.
Apart from the top two seeds, some other competitors to look out for this year will be No 33 Makoto Taniguchi, No 96 Yoshitatsu Beppu
and No 65 Tatsuya Murata. One more competitor to keep an eye on will be this year's Team Japan captain at the International
Team tournament held in Russia back in May, No 97 Tadakuni Tokuda, after his shock departure
by knock out at the Osaka Weight category champs.
On the foreign competitor's perspective, watch out for No 48 Andre Stepin, No 17 Iliya Karpenko and
No 80 Nurumagamedo Mamedov, all from Russia.
The competition is made up
of four blocks, A, B, C and D. Each block contains 32 fighters. Here at Kyokushin news, we rate the following names
as possibilities for winning their blocks and making the top 4.
A Block: No 17, Iliya Karpenko (Russia)
B Block: No 48, Andre Stepin (Russia)
C Block: No 96, Yoshitatsu Beppu
D Block: No 128, Kentaro Tanaka

Results of the 2008 All Japan Championships 8 November 2008
On November 2nd, Makoto Taniguchi became the 2008 All Japan open champion by defeating Zahari Damyanov from
Bulgaria in the final. Makoto went on attack form the start, attacking Zahari's left leg
aggresively with gedan mawashii geris. Zahari's left leg appeared injured and he attempted to evade Makoto's
kicks, but it wasn't enough as Makoto worked hard with explosive hand and leg combinations to win by decision in one round.
2008 All Japan top 8 results: click here
It may have been a completely different result if Zahari hadn't been so injured. Up until the final, Zahari displayed
an outstanding performance with his jodan hiza geri, knocking out Tatsuya Murata who placed 8th at last
years world champs in the quarter finals. In the semi-final, he won with a wazari against Kentaro Tanaka when he stunned
him with another jodan hiza geri. He was starting to appear as the dominant fighter of the day and possibly the champion
until he faced Makoto's relentless low thigh kicks in the final. Zahari has had a very successful year, winning the North American championships
in New York and as the super-heavyweight runner up at the All Japan weight catergory tournament in June.
Makoto Taniguchi had an impressive build up to the final,
a heavyweight at 178cm and 100kg with plenty of stamina, he displayed speed and power with aggressive attacks to drive his opponents back. He
didn't give his opponents much space as he kept the pressure on them the whole time through the fights. Although
he didn't compete in the All Japan weight catergory tournament held in June, he was a member of Team Japan at the International
Team tournament held in May in Russia. He had three fights resulting in three draws.
Third and fourth:
Kentaro Tanaka was given third place after Hiroyuki Kitachi withdrew
from the fight off for third place after the doctor recommended that he shouldn't fight due to his sustained injuries.
Hiroyuki a veteran at 36 years old and in his 12th All Japan did well to defeat Makoto Akaishi, the 2008 Japan super-heavyweight champion in
the quarter finals. However, It was the second time Kentaro Tanaka lost by wazari in two consecutive All Japans; in 2006
to a jodan mawashii and this time to a jodan hiza geri, both from foreign competitors.
Two time consecutive champion Yoshiaki Uchida didn't compete this year. Yoshiaki Uchida is on
a break from competitive Karate. Although he continues to instruct at a dojo in Kyoto while he is working
, he hasn't competed since least years World Championships. He recently attended the
Kyokushin festival held every year in Kyoto to assist with judging.

Artur Hovhannisyan Completes the 100 Man Kumite March 31st, 2009
Congratulations to Artur Hovhannisyan who completed the 100 man kumite on the 29th of March. After starting, the entire
event took 4 hours and 7 minutes to finish. Artur was escorted to hospital in a waiting ambulance
after sustaining heavy bruising all over his body.
Out of the hundred opponents, a surprising number of reputable past tournament champions turned up to
fight, support and cheer Artur to the end. Although spectators aren't permitted, a number of local branch
chiefs came along to support Artur as well. Current world champion, Ewerton Teixeira, who fought in the K-1
the day before, also watched.
The 100 man kumite commenced at 1.00pm with Makoto Akaishi (2008 All Japan heavy weight champion) as his
first opponent. Akaishi, a close friend also based at Honbu dojo, helped Artur train and prepare leading
up to the 100 man. Akaishi fought Artur once more near the end. In his first 20 fights, Artur
moved a lot, countering with strong chudan mawashii geris, scoring no ippons and the odd wazari. This was
an unusual strategy as it forced him to fight the full 90 seconds of each round. Artur basically finished
almost every fight right through to the end. At the 20th fight, Kancho Matsui advised him to focus more
on speed and timing rather than powerful techniques which would make him tire more quickly. Artur threw more
jodan mawashi geris, however he didn't really attempt any ashi barai (leg sweep) techniques which may have
helped him to score more wazaris.
After the 60th fight, Artur took a 15 minute break, changed his dogi and redid his strapping. By this time
the bruising was quite visible all over his body. He pushed through the sixties taking several water breaks,
with the doctors looking over him. By fight 73, Artur really began to tire and lost the fight by ippon gachi
to his opponents strong punches. It was clear that his body had sustained massive bruising and he was in pain.
The fights didn't get any easier, but Artur showed his stamina, by constantly trying to move and evade in the
limited space in the main dojo of Ichigeki Plaza. With over a hundred people participating and viewing, and a
windowless dojo the conditions were quite warm. In the eighties and nineties, Artur persevered on, even with
Kancho asking him twice if he was OK. Still waiting to fight was, 2007 World Champs runner up Jan Soukop; previous
world middleweight champion Emil Kostov; and Tatsuya Murata who placed 5th in the 2008 All Japan open. His support
crew consisted of Shihan Narushima, Joji Hibino and Andre Oustinov, constantly supporting him through out the
day. The last three fights of the 100 man kumite included in order, Glaube Feitosa, Kentaro Tanaka and No 100,
Francisco Filhio.

2009 World Weight Team Finalized. 11 June 2009
The 4th World Weight Championships will be held In Chiba prefecture from the 21st of August
until the 23rd at the Makuhari Messe event hall. Japan will have two representatives in each of the
light, middle, heavy and super heavy weight divisions. Last years 2008 All Japan open championships
produced six of the eight representatives with the two light weight candidates
chosen from the final of the All Japan Weight Championships held on June 7th.
It was an interesting light-weight division as the best of Japan appeared to display their skills.
In all, eighty five light-weight competitors gathered in Osaka to find out which two
would be chosen. The two seeded favorites, Yuzo Suzuki and Tomohiko Matsuoka who
placed 1st and 2nd in the middle-weight division last year dropped down a weight
class in order to make the team for the World Championships. Suzuki from Tokyo and Matsuoka from Osaka
have been rivals for a while, but it was Suzuki again with his relentless punches and hiza geris that
dominated once more to win by decision in the first round.
Suzuki had been strong up until he had a narrow win in the semi-final against
Yuya Fujita from Ehime prefecture who seems to just keep improving. It looked like Fujita was going to the final
with his strong middle kicks echoing in the arena as he stung Suzuki with several of them. He was able to
maintain the distance between them, preventing Suzuki from closing the gap to use his punches. His footwork
and strong kicks almost made it look like he was going to take the fight but the center referee called for an
extension after Fujita received 2 flags against 2 for a draw. After another draw was called in the final
extension, the fight was awarded to Suzuki for breaking the most boards.
Yuzo Suzuki has now won his fourth All Japan
weight title; twice as the middleweight and now twice as a lightweight. Placing second in the
lightweight division of the 2005 World Championships, he'll be one of the favorites to win this year.
The final team is,
Super heavy weight:
Makoto Taniguchi, 178 cm / 100kg, 2008 All Japan Champion.
Makoto Akaishi, 187cm / 93kg, 2008 All Japan, 6th place.
Heavy weight:
Kentaro Tanaka, 180cm / 91kg, 2008 All Japan, 3rd place.
Tatsuji Murata, 172cm / 82kg, 2008 All Japan, 5th place.
Middle weight:
Hiroyuki Kitachi, 169cm / 80kg, 2008 All Japan, 4th place
Zenjuro Mori, 174 cm / 78kg, 2008 All Japan, 8th place.
Light weight:
Yuzo Suzuki, 168cm / 69kg, 2009 All Japan light-weight Champion.
Tomohiko Matsuoka, 171cm / 70kg, 2009 All Japan light-weight Runner up.

2009, All Japan Open Championships 25 Nov 2009
The 2009 All Japan championships was held over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of November at the Tokyo
Prefectural Gymnasium. Some big names attended the champs including three of the top eight
competitors at the recent 2007 World Championships. Alejandro Navarro, Darmen Sadvokasov and Eduardo
Tanaka all came through again to place in the top 8 at this year's All Japan. However last year's winner,
Makoto Taniguchi was absent due to the health of a family member and this year's world light weight
champion, Yuzo Suzuki was taking a break.
The third round fight between Darmen Sadvokasov (Russia) and Tadakuni Tokuda was particularly exciting as the
two of them went toe to toe for basically 3 rounds. Tokuda gave Darmen no space, and adjusted to the Russian
fighter's style well. At times they were chest to chest with Darmen occasionally having to go backwards to ward
off the pressure from Tokuda. The fight ended in a draw. With no 10kg weight difference between them, Darmen won
on board breaks, 21 to 14.
The 05 and 06 All Japan Champion Yoshiaki Uchida made a come back to the tournament scene after being absent since his
early departure from the 2007 World Open Championships. Uchida had been training in Taekwondo before the
tournament, and it clearly showed as he barely punched, throwing a variety of low and high kicks against
Eduardo Tanaka (Brazil). He eventually lost to Eduardo after 2 extensions by weight decision. In the quarter
finals, veteran Hiroyuki Kidachi again showed why he is one of the hardest middle weights around when he
subdued Darmen's relentless attacks to battle to a draw and win by weight decision, 79kg to 91kg and progress to the top 4.
Alejandro Navarro showed why he was a world class fighter, blitzing World middleweight champion
Zenjuro Mori in one round and then the seeded Makoto Akaishi to meet Kentaro Tanaka once more in their second final
together this year. In the prior rounds, Kentaro Tanaka looked like the Tanaka of old where he clearly displayed his great
speed and strength. He convincingly defeated Yoshitatsu Beppu, the current Japanese light heavy weight champion, in
the first round to face Kidachi and finally Navarro.
The eventual show down in the final between Kentaro Tanaka and Alejandro Navarro was a real nail
biter as Navarro's aggresive attacks appeared quite effective until he stunned Tanaka with an illegal
face punch in the final 3 seconds of the first round. He was penalized with a second warning which equated to
a gentan ichi (penalty point) and lost the fight. An unfortunate way to lose any final. Even the official Kaikan website
quotes "Navarro dominated Tanaka throughout fight but suffered a defeat due to 'Genten-Ichi' or one point deduction."
Overall, there weren't a lot of knock outs or knock downs, but there was a noticable increase of more high kicks
being thrown by the competitors. Even Kentaro Tanaka diversed from his usual low kick routine to throw jodan ushiro mawashii
geris.
RESULT 1st: Kentaro Tanaka, 2nd: Alejandro Navarro, 3rd: Makoto Akaishi.

Update: After placing second at the 41st All Japan on November 22nd, a week later
Alejandro Navarro won the 2009 European Open Championships. Held in Paris on the 28th of November, Alejandro Navarro
retained the championship for the fourth time with consecutive wins in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
