The Trainers of Team Ichigeki

The Kyokushin K1 training team based at Ichigeki plaza in Ebisu, Tokyo is made up of 3 trainers. Mauricio Da Silva from Brazil is the only trainer directly from Kyokushin. Mauricio has experience in kickboxing and MMA fighting. The other two trainers are Jayson Vemoa and Faii Falamoe. Jayson was a World kickboxing champion and Faii was a boxing champion. Faii also helped prepare Sumo Grand Champion Yokuzuna Akebono for his K1 matches. The three of them work together with Faii focusing on the boxing training while Jayson and Mauricio do the kickboxing side. Jayson and Faii, both from New Zealand were hired by the Kyokushin Kaikan through Team Sefo, the support team for Ray Sefo a K1 fighter from New Zealand. Ray Sefo who trains at Ichigeki plaza when he's in Tokyo has had a long relationship with the Kaikan ever since he trained with Shihan Francisco Filhio when he was competing on the K1 circuit. Even though Shihan Filhio has retired from the K1 circuit, Ray Sefo continues to train with members of his team at Ichigeki Plaza in preperation for his fights.

Glaube Feitosa in the 2007 K1 Grand Prix final.

Glaube Feitosa

On September 29th 2007 at K1 Seoul, Glaube Feitosa defeated Harid De Faust from Germany on a points decision. De Faust collected one of Glaube's deadly high knees and a straight left in the first round but it wasn't enough to put him away. A good win for Glaube, however after qualifying for the K1 Grand prix final in Yokohama arena on December 8th he lost to Sammy Shultz by decision in the first round of the 2007 K1 final. Glaube struck a nice right hander to Sammy in the 3rd round but unfortunately Shultz delivered some jodan hiza geris of his own to dominate and win by decision. Glaube's defense had certainly improved compared to his loss against Shultz 2 years ago. Sammy Shultz went on to win his third K1 Grand prix championship after defeating 3 time winner Peter Aerts in the final.

Ewerton Teixeira to debut in K1 Yokohama

2007 Asian K1 champion, Yusuke Fujimoto

After only five months since winning the world champs, Ewerton Teixeira will make his debut against Yusuke Fujimoto at K1 Yokohama on April 13. Fujimoto the 2007 Asia K1 grand prix champion has a fight record of 40 fights , 25 wins, 15 losses, with 12 knock outs. Ewerton commented that he was looking forward to fighting the King of Asian K1. In reference to Ewerton's debut, Kancho Matsui says a champion shows their true ability when they take on a new challenge that appears difficult or dangerous. To confront new challenges is the spirit of Kyokushin.

When asked why he was competing so soon after the world champs and with such little time to prepare, Ewerton replied that his next goal is to become the 10th World champion as well. In order to achieve his goal, he wants to keep his motivation up by facing new challenges. Ewerton's fight against Fuijimoto will be the second to last fight of the night, just before the main event of the current 2008 K1 Champion Sammy Schilt's battle against Mark Hunt from New Zealand. Not only is Ewerton making his Debut but the entire Ichigeki team will be fighting at K1 Yokohama.

Team Ichigeki is

Ewerton Teixeira V's Yusuke Fujimoto / Japan
Glaube Feitosa V's Alex Roberts / U.S.A
Alexander Pichkunov V's Chalid "Die Faust" / Germany
Takumi Sato V's Tsuyoshi Nakasako / Japan

Shihan Filhio has joined Team Ichigeki's training in order to help them prepare. Shihan Filhio noted that Ewerton is doing between 10 to 15 rounds of sparring a session compared to his 5 or 6 when he first started training for K1. Shihan Filhio noted that Ewerton has a similar combination fighting style to previous K1 great Ernest Hoost however he feels that Ewerton's power is more superior. For Ewerton the biggest difference between Kyokushin and K1 is the wearing of gloves but he feels that Kyokushin Karate's strong kicks will be an asset for his challenge in K1. He also mentioned that in order to push himself more, he visualizes Shihan Filhio and Glaube Feitosa reminding him how they've trained harder than he has.

2008 K1 Grandprix Final         12 December 2008

Post fight interviewer: Do you have a goal for the next year?
Teixeira: To be the Grand Prix Champion.

Ewerton Teixeira has had a great first year on the K1 circuit. To qualify as one of the final 8 in the US$400,000 Grandprix final, was a great achievement for somebody with practically no kick boxing fights prior to K1. If there was ever a rookie award, he would have to be a contender for it. On Saturday, December 6th, Ewerton Teixeira fought three rounds against Errol Zimmerman from Holland. After the final bell, it was awarded to Errol Zimmerman on points. The first round would have had to have been Teixeira's. However Zimmerman appeared to come back in the next two rounds to put Texeiria on the canvas with a punch near the end of the third round. Teixeira commented after the match that it stunned him but he was able to recover quickly.

Interviewer: How about the first fight?
Zimmerman: Against Teixeira? He is a great fighter. It was difficult to fight him. He is like a tree. It is very hard to fight someone like him.

That's two Kyokushin notches on Zimmerman's belt now, with a win over Glaube Feitosa in Seoul and now against Teixeira. Errol Zimmerman lost in the second round to the eventual runner up, Badr Hari.

Interviewer: Can you tell us in a little more detail about how youfd like to improve?

Teixeira: I have a lot of experience with the flow of kyokushin fights, but I donft have that much with K-1. I think that is why I lost some stamina in the final round, and I was knocked down as a result of it. I need to get used to this, and I also want to really improve on the way I am landing my punches.

In addition, team Ichigeki member Ko Taisei was the opening fight on the night. Ko came away with a win by decision over Takeru from Seido Kaikan. Ko now stands at 2 wins from 2 fights.

K1 Yokohama, 3 / 3.         28 March 2009

Kyokushin rocked at the K-1 Yokohama Finals on the 28th of March and came away with three wins for Glaube Feitosa, Ewerton Teixeira and Takumi Sato. Both Feitosa and Sato won by knock out and Teixeira went a gruelling 5 rounds with French Veteran Jerome Le Banner to win by decision in the second extension.
Glaube Feitosa, appeared to be back in form. His opponent Junichi Sawayashiki was saved by the bell in the first round after being stunned by a jab from Feitosa. Then in the second round, Feitosa finished him off with another jab to claim the win. Ewerton Teixeira battled against power puncher, Jerome Le Banner. Declared a draw after three rounds, they went a further two extensions, and the fight was awarded to Teixeira. It was clear from the start that Teixeira was well aware of Le Banner's punches. He avoided punching toe to toe and worked Le Banner's mid section with powerful chudan mawashii geris. After the final bell, Le Banner's mid section was very red and reports state that blood was seeping out. Takumi Sato, first up from the team, demolished his opponent in the third and final win by gedan mawashii geri and brings his record to 5 wins, 3 losses with 3 knockouts.
Jan Soukop the runner up at the 2007 World Championships has joined Team Ichigeki and was there in support for his team mates on the day. Although he's training hard at Ichigeki plaza, no date for his debut has been set yet.

Jan Soukop debuts in K1         August 2009

Jan Soukop On the 11th of August, Jan Soukop made his K1 debut against The new K1 heavy weight champion Kyotaro. Kyotaro won the title after Bada Hari made it vacant from his illegal tactics debacle against K1 World Champion Remy Bojansky in the final of the 2008 K1 World Champs. To prepare for this tough first fight, Jan had been training with the ichigeki team since last year. Jan did well offensively, displaying some good combinations, but in the third round he changed his tactics and attempted to go toe to toe with a more experienced Kyotaro. He came out second best from a punch when Kyotaro countered Jan's jab with an overhand right to connect and send him to the canvas. Overall, Team Ichigeki was happy with Jan's performance and will look at setting him up with another fight in the near future.

In other news, Takumi Sato and Ko Taisei represented Team Ichigeki at the Seoul K1 grand prix on August 2nd. Competeing in a draw of 8 fighters, Taisei weighing in at just 86 kg lost in the first round to Min Ho Song at 106 kg. Takumi Sato won his first fight and advanced to the semi-final where he lost to Taiei Kin from Seido Kaikan.

Ewerton Teixeira and Glaube Feitosa have been included in the K1 WGP Final 16 on September 26 in Seoul. They'll each have one fight in order to qualify for the Top 8 which will be held on December 5 in Yokohama. Their opponents have yet to be named.
Alexander Pichkunov will be off the K1 scene for a while as he recovers from micro surgery to his knee in Russia.. Alexander returned to Russia last year to have an operation on injuries he had sustained while fighting in K1. We hope to see Alexander back in action soon, however no date has been set for his return.

New Additions to Team Ichigeki.         20 May 2010

Takumi Sato fought recently to a slim loss on the 3rd of April against Sergii Lashchenko from Ukraine. Although a loss for Sato, it had been his first fight back after recovering from an injury. Sato displayed his hunger to win with an all out fist fight in the final round with both fighters landing punches but neither could knock each other out. Going the full 3 rounds Sato showed he had a tough jaw but the fight was awarded to Sergii Lashchenko on points.

Teixeiria has just returned from Holland after 2 months of intensive K1 training. Having not fought since the 2009 K1 grand prix final on December 5th, where he was knocked out disputedily by Alistair Overeem. On 2009, Overeem forced Teixiera down onto a knee kick knocking him cold. It was clear from their visible protest that the team ichigeki trainers were unhappy. This year amendments seem to have been already made in response to the incident and the clinching rules have been revised. Fighters are only allowed to clinch once before delivering one, not multiple knee kicks. No fight has yet been set for Teixeiria.

K1 has introduced some new weight groups which has meant some new members maybe joining the team. This will keep the Ichigeki trainers busy after the loss of Alexander Pichkunov who has left K1 under circumstances decided upon by the Kyokushin Kaikan. However A 63kg class was launched on May 2nd where Kyokushin representative, Yuto Watanabe lost to Naoki Ishikawa by decision. It also looks like an 85kg class will be launched. No fights have been lined up yet but this could mean that Ko Taisei who has been competing against the heavy weights may drop down a division. In addition it might include Kengo Shimizu who along with Yuto Watanabe are from the Johoku branch of kyokushin. Shimizu and Watanabe were both representatives at the 2007 World Open Champs.

Finally, Jan Soukop just fought to a loss by decision in K1 Romania on the 21st of May. He was up against Mladen Brestovac from Croatia in a 3 round reserve tournament fight.
